Christmas holidays
The christmas holidays 2028 runs from 22 December to 5 January.
The Christmas break in Wallonia-Brussels lasts about two weeks, from Christmas Eve until early January. It is one of the rare periods when the three Belgian communities share virtually the same dates.
This makes the period particularly convenient for bilingual families and those with members in different communities. The break coincides with the shortest days of the year and the onset of winter.
It is traditionally a time of togetherness, with extended family gatherings on Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.
Activities during the christmas holidays
Winter Wonders in Brussels attracts more than two million visitors every year with market chalets, a Ferris wheel, and light shows. Temporary ice rinks appear in many cities, including Namur, Mons, and Liege.
The Ardennes offer cross-country skiing and winter hiking through snow-covered pine forests. The Domain of the Caves of Han organises winter events particularly suited for families.
Liege is known for its Village de Noel, the oldest and one of the largest Christmas markets in the country. For those who prefer to stay indoors, the numerous museums in Brussels and Wallonia offer a rich programme.
Practical info about the christmas holidays
Most shops are open during the break, except on 25 December and 1 January. Public transport runs on an adjusted schedule during the holidays, with fewer trains and buses on the public holidays themselves.
Childcare is limited during this period, as many organisations close between Christmas and New Year. Municipalities with a substantial holiday programme usually publish their schedules in November.
The winter sales start on 3 January, making the final days of the break ideal for bargain hunting.
Did you know this about the christmas holidays?
The Christmas break was not changed by the 2022-2023 school reform in FWB. It remains at two weeks, just like in the other communities.
The reason is simple: the Christmas break already fitted within the rhythm of seven weeks of classes followed by two weeks of rest. The Village de Noel in Liege has existed since 1986 and is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the country.
During the Christmas break, the city of Brussels also organises the traditional New Year's Eve fireworks, drawing thousands of spectators.
